Skilled Worker Applications Information

The most popular way of migrating to Canada is through the “skilled worker” category, sometimes also called the “independent category”. In 2003 over 106,000 new immigrants came to Canada through the skilled worker category.

"Skilled workers" includes many different types of workers, including professionals such as managers, engineers and lawyers, but also trades people such as construction workers  and technicians.

Skilled worker applications are for those who have a background, or résumé, that is attractive to Canada. Qualifying individuals have skills and training that our immigration authorities believe will contribute to Canada's economy, and will enable the immigrant to establish him or herself, and his or her family, in Canada without too much difficulty.

Canada awards points for different attributes, such as language skills, education and job experience. Experience in specified jobs is required. Where an applicant collects enough points, the applicant is eligible for permanent resident in Canada. The current pass mark is 67 points.

In addition to gathering enough points, the successful applicant must not be inadmissible to Canada for criminal, security, medical, or other reasons.

The successful applicant must carefully prepare the necessary forms, and support the claims made in those forms with a carefully prepared supporting package of documents and submissions. The successful applicant will also have to present well at an interview with an immigration officer.

Most rejected applications fail due to inadequate supporting packages and poor presentations at interviews. This is where qualified counsel can make the greatest difference. As well as assisting with the completion of forms, Gregory James assists with the preparation and presentation of supporting documents, and provides persuasive written submissions which squarely address the concerns of Canada's visa officers. This is where experience and knowledge make a difference.

Properly prepared submission packages and proper preparation for interviews are at the heart of a successful application.

Processing times depend on the visa office servicing the country where the applicant has status (country of citizenship or country where the person resides with legal status).

Some skilled workers can qualify for temporary work permits to live and work in Canada while their application for permanent residence is being processed.

Construction workers are in high demand in Canada. For more information see our News page.
