There are a number of different kinds of children that a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor, including

  • Dependant children

  • Orphaned relatives under the age of 18 years, 

  • Children you intend to adopt

  • Children under guardianship.

It is important to note that in some cases a child can become ineligible if his or her status changes while the application is being processed. For example, a child who marries or enters into a common law relationship, or who stops going to university before their application is accepted may then be disqualified as a dependant.
